In His Own Words: The Biggest Skeptic
You could say I was a skeptic. I had just graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma and sent off my application to fifteen different medical schools. At this time, my mother began experiencing chest pain, and my dad took her to see a cardiologist. The doctor told my parents that Mom needed a pacemaker right away and insisted that they schedule the surgery immediately. My dad, being the caring person he is, told the doctor that they were going to get a second opinion before agreeing to surgery.
My dad asked me to come with them to the appointment for the second opinion at the University of Oklahoma Teaching Hospital the following week, and of course I said yes. After examining my mom, the doctor informed us that she did not need to have surgery for a pacemaker and that her chest pain was caused by a pinched nerve in her upper back. The doctor advised us to get her under chiropractic care as soon as possible. I was shocked by this news—I guess you could say I was the biggest skeptic.
Two days later, I accompanied my mom to her appointment with the chiropractor. The chiropractor did a case history, conducted a thorough exam and took X-rays. The next day, he showed us the X-rays and explained that my mom had a pinched nerve between her shoulder blades, then he gave my mother a very mild adjustment.
Within two weeks, my mom was totally out of pain. She finished her chiropractic care program, and the pain has never returned.
Changing Course
This situation with my mother had me wondering if medical school was really right for me. After several sleepless nights, I called the chiropractor who was helping my mom and made an appointment to talk to him.
He spent the entire afternoon with me, explaining chiropractic and answering all my questions, and told me to check out Palmer College of Chiropractic. The next week, I flew to Davenport, Iowa and was very impressed with the school. I was so excited I might help people without surgery or prescription medication that I applied as soon as I got back home. I was accepted and moved to Davenport, Iowa.
During my first semester at Palmer, my dad called to tell me I had received a letter of acceptance to medical school and asked me what I wanted to do. I told him that chiropractic was what I wanted to do—to help someone avoid surgery and treat the cause of their pain. After receiving my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer, I returned home and opened Chiaf Chiropractic Clinic.
Practice Philosophy
My practice philosophy is simplicity and gentleness in chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture. I use Activator Methods® low-force instrument-assisted adjustments, and micro-current auriculotherapy to the external ear, which is acupuncture without needles.
I continue my education and learning to keep up with the latest advancements in chiropractic care and acupuncture. I am a fellow of the American Acupuncture Society.
